It is with deep regret that Surrey County Netball Association advises that Lyn Handley passed away on 31st December 2016. Our sincere condolences go to her family.
Lyn was Vice-President of SCNA up until last year and has been involved in netball in Croydon for over half a century. At club level, she helped set up CMO club, which is one of the longest running clubs within Croydon and still fields regular teams in CNL as well as the Metropolitan League. Her life revolved around netball in all spheres – as a player, an umpire and running junior teams for her club. Lyn was a very keen supporter of Surrey County and was always at Inter-County Tournaments throughout this country, as well as Jersey in the 1980s. When Croydon League became autonomous, Lyn became Chairman and during her tenure initiated such competitions as the Chairman’s Cup, which is still running today. More recently she sponsored the Defence trophy, which is awarded to the team in the Premier League of CNL who have the lowest number of goals scored against them. Lyn became an Intermediate Umpire in 1976 and was keen to pass on her knowledge of umpiring to players in Croydon by setting up summer umpiring courses for a number of years. She umpired Surrey County matches under the old competition structure and mentored a number of umpires. Lyn also helped with Croydon Schools events as an umpire, tutor etc. |
When London Youth Games started at Crystal Palace NSC, Lyn assisted in selecting at trials for the Croydon borough netball team. This event was to become a must on her calendar and she attended either as an umpire, or a table official for many, many years.
Since Surrey Storm was formed, Lyn was to be seen cheering from the stands. She regularly attended the Superleague matches with her family and just loved the atmosphere of the matches. She also was to be seen supporting the national team at Wembley and latterly the Copper Box.
Netball will sorely miss a committed supporter and good friend.
Funeral arrangements: Service at St Mildred’s Church, 30 Bingham Road, Addiscombe CR0 7EB at 12 noon on Thursday, 19th January 2017.
